So, since many have heard, looked interested in, but dont know a lot about this game, I have done thee a favor! I went out and bought it, and have played a good several hours a day into it. So, I hope this helps you people out:
Now, I love this game. But I'll admit right now, this is not a game for everyone.
The game itself seems simple enough: You're a protagonist, with no memory, but you cant help but feel this huge sense of guilt. The people around you are twisted/consumed by their baroque (twisted fantasies) and in order to heal your sin, you must get to the bottom of this tower (thus saving the world). Easy enough, right? Wrong! You see, there's all these meta-beings that get in your way, and you also have this depleting Vitality that casually drains away to make sure you cant stand in one place for too long. Plus, this tower is huge... in fact, at this point I doubt there's even a bottom. To make matters worse, if you die in the dungeon, no matter how far down you got, you lose all your items, go back to lvl 1, and have to start again at the top. Joyous, no?
Fear not! For here in lies the ingeneous of this game!
-When you die, it's not a bad thing! You actually do get somewhere even if you die on the first few floors the first hundred times.
-The dungeon constantly changes... so floor X will never be the same as before.
-The story line gets revealed the more you play it, no matter how good or bad you think you are.
-So many ways to twink your character...
Now, the down falls that kinda made me sad:
-Graphics are ok... not terrible, but could be better.
-CAMERA SUCKS! C'mon, it's 2008. I dont want to be suprised when something kills me because I couldnt see it through the wall!
-Although the music appeals greatly to my liking, it's repetitive... one tune through most of the game.
Now, unless you have patience, time, and are willing to use your brain a bit to put the pieces of this game together, I dont think you'll enjoy yourself very much. But if you're a sucker for story lines (like myself) I'll tell you this:
STORY LINE IS AMAZING!
...so to cap it all up:
Baroque is a game that challenges your mind as well as your reflexes. The story line is amazingly twisted beyond all belief, there's a thousand ways to custom your character, it's morbid (complete with tormented souls), and actually really fun when you figure out what's going on. The camera and graphics may be so-so, but it's small sacrifices for the level of detail and intecratcy intertwined within this game.
